101 N Belmont Blvd

It was late July, 1914. Bosnia and Austria were setting the stage for World War I, Woodrow Wilson was our new President and the biggest building west of the Mississippi had just been completed. Measuring nearly a half a mile around the outside walls, the new Montgomery Ward building at St. John and 101 Belmont was a sight to see. It boasted over 22 acres of floor space and contained over 14 miles of iron pipe and 35 miles of electrical wiring. It took 2 million feet of lumber to construct the forms needed to mold the 45,000 cubic yards of concrete which make up the walls and floors. It contained a kitchen and restaurant larger than any other in Kansas City, serving over 3,000 employees. And it cost over $1.5 million to build.
